2013 New Years Resolutions

Because 2012's resolutions were so successful I will again, attempt 10, the odds aree in my favor to have another great year that way :)

1. The News
Last year I completely feel off the map with what was going on in the news, I will make sure I read the paper and watch the news more.

2. News Music
Like with the news I completely lost my touch with new music, I will make sure this doesn't happen in 2013!

3. Exercise
I don't want to be a muscle machine, just feel more energetic, and fitter. I will buy some dumbbells and exercise at home when I can (yep, can't afford a gym).

4. Freelance
I will try and get more paid freelance work, perhaps think about the idea of going freelance.

5. Update my Flickr page
I updated the page a few times last year, more will be done in 2013!

6. 1 Gig a month
Last year I watched a new film practically every week, this year I will try to see at least one band live each month (If I have the money of course..)

7. Music videos
Last year we only managed 2 music videos, of course they are still great. However in 2013 I want to make more! We need a big portfolio of content.

8. Film Festivals
We sent our music videos to only a handle of film festivals, 2013 we submit to more!

9. Fruit & Veg
This was only kept up during the first half of the year, I will make sure it will happen throughout 2013.

10. 1 creative video a week
I have been uploading one video a week to my WatchingMatthew channel over the last few weeks of the year, I will continue this in 2013, It's good fun!

Do you have a huge list for 2013 resolutions?

2012 New Years Resolutions RESULTS

This is a list of my resolutions from 2012

1. USE THIS BLOG MORE!
I have definitely managed that and have got myself into a nice routine, 2013 will be the same effort
2. Enter Fenixx Productions work into film festivals
We did and managed to get short listed at the Turrock Film Festival - We will do this ALOT more in 2013
3. Increase the audience for my second blog, Stupid Customers
The blog is practically dead, but I am now trying with Sleepy Bears
4. Move closer into London for work (Zone 2 or 3)
Yep, I now live in Southfields and I love it :)
5. Use my camera more often to take photographs for my neglected Flickr page
I updated the site now and then, but I have a nice SLR I'm going to try and take that out with me more often from now on.
6. Watch a film I have not seen once every week
Yep, me and Lauren have managed this, with my Film Review Friday posts
7. Try to be less predictable
I think I have achieved this...
8. Drink the suggested pints of water a day
We get free bottles of water at work, I drink it a lot!
9. Eat more fruit and veg
I go up and down with this, it'll be a harder push next year
10. Try to get back into the routine of flossing my teeth
Yep, all good!

To my surprise it looks like it has been a successful year for me. It definitely helps to have a long list to make you feel better about yourself!

With the partial fails in mind (the ones in orange) I am going to move them into 2013's resolutions, of course I am still going for 10. Check back on the blog my post on my 2013 resolutions.

Thursday Tunes: The XX @ Brixton Academy

Sunday 16th December me and Lauren went to Brixton Academy to see The XX, I unfortunately missed them at Bestival this year, therefore I was rather excited to see them this time round.

I have never been to a concert for a quiet intimate show (I guess not so intimate at Brixton Academ), so I was intrigued to find out how the show will pan out.

During the change over for The XX after the support a full white curtain went down to cover up the stage, giving a lovely theatrical look which got me really excited. The XX took to the stage right on time (as I expected) and kicked things off with Coexist. It was a wonderful song to start with, the band hand the crowd in their hands straight away with everyone singing with Romy during the choruses.

This set the tone for the rest of the show. Every track sounded wonderful in the venue with the crowd singing along to the soft vocals of Romy. Once each song had finished there was dead silence in the venue, it was wonderful to witness, you could tell the crowd were really listening and enjoying every possible moment. Some points the crowd irrupted into applauding the band.

I will say one thing, some of the songs sounded exactly the same to the album, which of course is fine...it shows how talented they are. However it did raise the realisation that this sounded like someone was just playing the album on a loud PA system. Of course I looked passed this opinion, and kept on listening. You could hear all the vocals perfectly due to the quiet crowd intensely listening on, bliss.

Here is a playlist of a few tracks I filmed from the night to give you an idea on how things went down.

If you are a fan of The XX, and looking to see them, I suggest you do it soon.

Also, are you going to attend their Night and Day festivals, the venue for Berlin at Spreepark looks bloody amazing, I would love to shoot a music video in there!

Brecon The Dog

Over the weekend when my dad came to visit I decided to film some footage of his dog, Brecon. He is such a lovely dog, and it's mad to think I used to really not like dogs. It's funny how much your opinions can change.

Enjoy!

The Weekend [15 + 16th Dec]

This weekend my dad, step-mum and her two children traveled up to see my flat, they haven't visited since I moved in. Therefore it was a good time to visit as I have now properly settled in and found my feet in the place...loving it!

They took up their dog, Brecon. Who is now 1 years old (think I've mentioned him a few times on this blog). Of course visiting a new place he was very excited, running around my flat which is smaller than the home he is used to. We took him out for a walk around Wimbledon common before we had some lunch to calm him down, and it did the trick.

He is so much bigger!

After lunch we went for another walk over to Wimbledon Village, whilst taking Brecon I decided to take my camera and take some footage. This of course will be my WatchingMatthew video for this week  I am sure you will like it :) - He was loving the walk through the woods, there was so many other dogs for him to go and say hello. But the part he must have loved most was all the large muddy puddles, he came back to the flat looking like a black labrador.

Saturday evening was spent at Laurens watching Harry Potter and some pizza, yum! I am now on the 3rd film!

Sunday we went into London to watch The XX at Brixton academy, which of course was bloody amazing! I will post more about that later this week perhaps.

How was your weekend!?

Wear a Christmas jumper & Save The Children

Today is officially the day to wear your best(worst) Christmas jumper and help raise awareness to save children's lives around world with the charity, Save The Children.

This year I decided to involve myself with this cause a little further thanks for my girlfriend, Lauren. We have put together this photo set for the blog, whatoliviadid.com, as this year Olivia has a dedicated blog post today for raising awareness for this great charity.

Help raise awareness today and wear your best(worst) Christmas jumper!

Tech Thursday: Google Maps App

Since the appalling effort from Apple releasing their own map navigation app I have been quite literally counting down the days for Google to release their own version...obviously counting down to christmas as well.

That's me at work, hiya!

Well yesterday the app was finally released....HOORAY!

I am so glad to see the app back on the homescreen of my iPhone, of course I can't delete Apple Maps...it has been bumped to the back page. I downloaded the app quite literally first thing this morning. One thing I am glad to see back on the app is different icons for underground stations and train stations, I still can't understand why Apple chose to use the same icons for both, that is far too confusing for tourists when walking around busy London.

I just hope this app will be strong and reliable with performance, as I have noticed with the Gmail app tends to crash.

Are you happy to see the app back on your phone!?

Peeping Tom

I am hoping this weeks video will make you laugh out loud....it definitely worked for me whilst editing. I always do this around the flat to my housemates and Lauren, and have always wondered what it looks like from their point of view.

No idea what I'm talking about...then watch below!

What do you think, did it make you chuckle?

And look, it's... 12:00 12 /12/2012 !

Tuesday Tunes: My Top 7 Albums

This year due to my extremely busy lifestyle with my new job, and other commitments. My music knowledge was slacking, therefore I only heard a small number of new albums. Next year I am going to try my hardest to get back into the new music scene. I get the tube two and from work 45mins each time, there is no excuse why I can't listen to the new material practically every day.

To be honest I am quite disappointed with myself, as I am a great lover of new music.

But anyway....here is my small list of my top 7( yes I only really listened to 7 new albums this year) favourite albums from this year in no particular order.

1 - Every Time I Die - 'Ex Lives'
2 - The Maccabees - 'Given To The Wild'
3 - Alt-J - 'Awesome Waves'
4 - The XX - 'Coexist'
5 - Alabama Shakes - 'Boys & Girls'
6 - Blood Red Shoes - ‘In Time To Voices’
7 - Jack White - ‘Blunderbuss’

What were you favourite albums of 2012?

The extended weekend

Fortunately for me, my weekend consisted of 3 days, I booked off Friday due to having 1 day of holiday left for the year at work. Of course picking a Monday or Friday off was the clear choice!

My Friday had a schedule of finishing off some Christmas shopping, which was partially successful (I have to buy the remaining presents online). Followed by recording my next YouTube video, and I have to admit it is going to be hilarious to hear your comments. I wont reveal more than that.

Saturday I met with Lauren in London to visit The Chocolate Festivals (we are such pigs). Obviously many more people had the same idea, and it was jammed packed with people trying to get a look in at all the homemade chocolate, but it was still great to attend. We each bought a slice of Cheesecake from the Sweet Tooth stall, I went for the Ferrero Rocher cheesecake, which was bloody amazing. Lauren went for the Malteser option, which was also great! We love cheesecake!

Ferrero Rocher Cheesecake...BOOM!
After The Chocolate Festival we walked further into London due to the nice sunshine across the city, and looked around Covent Garden. We finished the evening with cooking up an amazing homemade Lasagne and watched Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I have never seen the films (I know...) and we are working our way through them, whilst Lauren recites some of the dialogue here and there.

Sunday, was very lazy getting out of bed around 12 to then chill all day. Perfect!

How was your weekend!? Have you attended The Chocolate Festival?

Guilty as charged.

Today I unfortunately haven't got a Film Review Friday post, apologies. However, I do have this hilarious and beyond trutful parody video about Instagram. The people behind this video, knew exactly what they were on about when writing these lyrics. I'm guessing they are also guilty of these sins.

I love the guy in the background taking a phto!
And yes...I do a majority of this on Instagram. Just have a look at my feed to the right of this post --->

My guess, this will go viral in a few days.

Thursday Tunes: Victoria Beckham looks at my music video location!

The other week on Daily Mail online (I don't read the site, I found this elsewhere...I promise!). It was reported Victoria Beckham has been mooching around the London area at a home to move into.

She has been looking at a mansion over in Richmond, which is actually the mansion we used to film the Kid Champion video earlier this year...amazing stuff!

Image from Daily Mail Online
I hope she chooses this house so I can say 'I shot a music promo in the Beckham's house'. If you can't remember the video, here is is below.

Very cool stuff!

#Movember 2012

If you remember back in the beginning of November I made a post to announce I will take part in Movember this year, and explained I will be making a video stop motion of my beard.

Well here it is :)

Think the beard was looking mighty fine this year, and I have decided to keep it.

Tech Tuesday: PopSLATE

New and developing technology will forever impress me, I'm a real geek at heart. PopSLATE has taken EInk (the stuff the Kindle works on) squashed it into a small screen and created an iPhone case for the iPhone 5.

The screen is continuously on, and runs on very low battery supply (I'm guessing from the iPhone). The screen displays impressively detailed images of your own choice. Something to look at when you have your iPhone face down on a table...at first this sounds a little pointless. But with the photos and the video demo, the result is surprisingly impressive. It could be a nice effect to have a case that acts like a slideshow, making your case continuously changing...the case would never get boring.

The device isn't available just yet, the company are raising money to kick off the product, below is an embedded link to donate money. I believe the product will only be available on the iPhone 5, I am presuming they are planning ahead for the foreseeable future of iPhone.

What do you reckon, would you purchase one?

My Weekend [1 - 2 Dec]

This weekend consisted of some catching up with friends from university, and relaxing. We went to a housewarming party for a friend over in Twickenham, she has moved into a one bedroom flat with her boyfriend....big step!

The evening was lovely to catch up with friends, it was great to realise how well we are getting on with our lives since graduating last year. I think we are all working the Monday - Friday routines, living the proper adult lives...we're all growing up too fast. Soon I imagine we will be getting invited round for dinner parties, so civilised!

I wish I could start everyday with this!
I always use traditional brown paper for presents!
Sunday kicked off with an amazing fry-up cooked up by me and my housemate, Luke. Unfortunately Lauren has not been well :( therefore couldn't participate in chowing down on the glorious brunch. Followed on I wrapped up my first few christmas presents whilst listening to christmas tunes with Lauren. Then finished off with me watching my Nirvana at Reading Festival 1992 DVD that Lauren got me for my birthday, whilst playing Roller Coaster Tycoon (love that game far too much).

A lovely chilled weekend, how was yours!?

Tech Thursday: Endless Road APP

Earlier this week I downloaded the fresh new game for my iPhone, Endless Road. The principle is to simply drive a car down a straight road, dodging other tracking, and avoiding the police. Sounds boring right? Not when you look at the design, and other features.

The whole graphic design behind the game is beautiful. A really simplistic layout, with minimal use of colours. All done with 3D models, which are tiny on the screen, giving off a Micro Machines feel.

Whilst you are driving down the straight and narrow path the road behind you disappears, resulting in you loosing the game when you get caught up with the disappearing road and fall down the gap. The ultimate goal is to travel through the different stages, stay alive with the road and collect the coins to upgrade your car with special perks; bomb, nitro boast, slow motion and a jumping option.

The game is surprisingly difficult, so far I have only managed to reach stage three with around 5,000 meters. Having the game so challenging is great, it improves how addictive the game can be. Plus the design is just enjoyable.

If you haven't played this game, and you like good design then I suggest you download it at the bargain price of 69p.

Headphones

The idea behind this video has been on my mind for a while now. I watched the Urbanear adverts on Vimeo a while back, and have been wanting to attempt the idea myself. The other night I finally got round to it, and here is the result.

A little go on After Effects after the edit, and I think it turned out quite well!

I actually really enjoyed editing this together.

What do you think!?

Tuesday Tunes: Paws Music

A while back me and a good friend of mine, Darren attempted to start the independent label, Paws Music. Connecting to the label we put on club nights in Twickenham with a DJ (Darren 'Paws') and local bands from the South West area.

Of course with our full time jobs running the label became difficult. Therefore we have decided on relaunching the site as a music blog. However, only dedicating it to local unsigned talent in the London area. So far we only have been starting off with focusing on bands from the South West.

Here is the blog, and if you are in a band or know someone who would be wanting their news to be posted on there get in touch :)

Film Review Friday [Everything Must Go, 2010]

For my birthday the other week Lauren brought me 'Everything Must Go' as a present, and we got round to watch the film the other night.

The comedy-drama tells the short story of Raymond Carver in the worst day of his life. Kicking off with getting fired from his previously secure job, returning home to find his wife has left him and changed the locks on his house, leaving all his belongings on the front lawn. He instantly decides on selling off all his possessions to the public with a yard sale....and that's about it.

Will Ferrell performs the role of Raymond perfectly, you really grasp hold of how much his life has been flipped upside down in an instant, you really feel his sadness. There is a lot of scenes expressing Raymonds this through drinking. Some of the scenes are quite hard to watch, as you witness Raymond desperate to have any last drop of alcohol to keep him going.

Of course this film is a turn away from Will's typical comical roles like, Anchorman or Step Brothers. I am a fan of his comedy roles, however these more serious films are refreshing to watch. You get to see Will really perform, and you realise how talented he is as an actor.

If you enjoyed his role in Stranger Than Fiction, which again is comedy-drama. Then you will enjoy this one.

Last week's VERY POSITIVE review of Skyfall!

Thursday Tunes: That song, from that advert

Every now and again an advert catches my eye, which I really enjoy the concept, and 9 times out of 10 the track also grabs my attention and becomes my new favourite song.

This has happened to me with the latest advert from Southern Comfort. The concept involves a man walking through a beach in his tight Y-Fronts with his belly out to the all seeing, carrying a cold glass of Southern Comfort expressing that he doesn't have a care in the world, and is loving the moment and is comfortable.

Click to watch the advert.

The advert is fantastic, and really depicts the laid back attitude someone can have in the sun with a good drink in hand....and the accompanying track is 'Hit or Miss' by Odetta, of course I have never heard of Odetta, but this song is fantastic, and haven't stopped listening to it since I discovered the track. So thank you Southern Comfort for introducing me to Odetta!

Here is the full song if you wanted to find it out yourself (and don't know how to go about with the wonderful powers of the internet).

Do you like the song or the advert OR both?

New York City 2012

Earlier this year me and Lauren had an AMAZING trip to New York City, here is the blog post about it. Whilst I was there I took my camera to make a small video, here is the end result for my YouTube channel.

It's crazy to think me and Lauren went to New York at the beginning of this year, as well as Paris and Amsterdam later into the year. Me and Lauren have had a good year for short holidays :)

Tuesday's Tunes: Foals are back!

Foals have been around since 2005 and developed a very strong loyal fan-base their talents have always been shown strongly through both full-length albums, 'Antidotes' and 'Total Life Forever'.

Since 'Total Life Forever' the band have been a little quiet, performing shows and DJ sets here and there. Until earlier this month they released a song onto Youtube, 'Inhaler'.

Straight away from my first listen I was blown away. The new sound is so strong, and a little heavier, which I love. This may not have come as a surprise due to the band changing their sound with previous two albums, this was one of the logical progressions. My highlight of the song is Yannis' new vocal sound, with a slight more shouting to it, great stuff!

Amazing track, cannot wait to hear the new album in February 2013.

Friends Reunited

This weekend I went back down to my hometown Fareham, where it will cost you £6 to have a taxi drive you 2 minutes down the road and where 3G just does not work...anywhere. But anyway this blog post is not about that.

I was back in my hometown to meet up with some school mates who haven't seen in well over a year, so of course I was quite excited to see them all again. We were meeting up to celebrate one of oure mates birthday from the other week, and met up in Fareham town centre, which I'll be honest is a bit of a dive. It is a very slow moving town, not a lot happens to the community. Luckily we were only there for one pint to round up the troops to then head to Portsmouth.

Arriving in Portsmouth improved the evening with plenty of drinks flowing. It was such a good night catching up with my old friends again, and made me realise I need to do it more often now that I work the Monday - Friday routine, it's easily achievable. Also I realise how great Portsmouth can sometimes be, especially Southsea by the seafront, it's lovely. Portsmouth does receive a lot of bad reviews, but if you were to see the good points, your opinion could change.

The weekend continued at my dads, for again more catch up, and some nice food. The weekend came to a close when me and Lauren met in London to have a little wonder around with all the christmas lights in the city. We spent some time in Carnaby Street and Covent Garden, both looking great with their christmas lights. A visit to Hamleys was swiftly finished as the shop was jammed back with tourist and shoppers, obvious for this time of year.

I'm such a big kid when it comes to Lego

Lauren met the (lego)Queen!
And one of the corgis!
A nice weekend of chilling and catching up with old friends, how was yours!?

Film Review Friday [Skyfall, 2012]

I wouldn't call myself a huge James Bond geek, although having watched all previous 22 films I believe my opinion is valid, with an understanding into how the James Bond saga should be represented. Which brings me onto the previous two films from Daniel Craig, Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace. Both were great films, taking Bond into the modern era of cinema, however I thought they lacked the true experience from a good Bond film, which thankfully is what you get from Skyfall.

The film thankfully chooses not to carry on from the (I'll admit, confusing) storyline of Quantum Of Solace and begins a new chapter into the saga. Where MI6 is under significant threat from the 'bad guys' and M is in a vulnerable state from being assassinated, which of course introduces to James Bond to rectify the sticky situation.

Sam Mendes steps up to direct this one and he does an excellent job, the film is jammed with twists and turns of action, many scenes where you think "Really...that can't happen?" then you wake up and remember "Oh yes he can...it's JAMES BOND!". The action sequences are breathtaking, I always admire how the films stick to the organic method of shooting all the action for real, making the audience really feel the heart of all the crash and bangs.

Javier Bardem as the evil villain, 'Silva' fitted the role perfectly with a slight camp edge, and brought back the film to how they should be. A simple cat and mouse storyline with the 'good guy' and 'bad guy' having a fit to the death. I wouldn't be embarrassed to put 'Silva' on a 'Top 10 James Bond Villians Of All Time', he could easily stand shoulder to shoulder with the best villains from previous films, he had the look of the classic Bond villain, 'Jaws'.

Mendes chooses to bring back Q into the mix, unfortunately this is not John Cleese, which is a shame. The young and talented Ben Whishaw takes on the role. However despite the immediate disappointment, this does open the book for some comical scenes with James and Q, which is definitely missed with Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace. You have to include Bond getting confused with the gadgets, and Q explaining his geeky ways.

Of course you can't miss out the other major components to complete the Bond package, the Austin Martin DB5. Yes it is back in all it's glory and still looks beautiful on screen. I was very glad to see the Austin back, and like Q opened up some more comical dialogue between Bond and M, which was enjoyable to see again.

The second half of the film is set in the heart of London, with Bond on the chase for Silva to stop him in his tracks of killing M. I was delighted to see all these chases around the beating heart of London, in the underground tubes and around other landmarks. It was a relief to see England getting the majority of airtime in the film, after all, Bond is an English character. All Bond films just have to include scenes of London. After London the film climaxes in Scotland, which I thought was the most impressive sequences of camera work,  Mendes made Scotland look beautiful through the camera lens.

The film flies through the simple story ticking all the James Bond boxes as mentioned previously, finishing off with you leaving the cinema feeling satisfied to being British and wanting to go back and watch all the previous films from start to finish.

FANTASTIC!

Tech Thursday: RIP Dailybooth

Monday morning I receive an unexpected email from Dailybooth, to explain the website is coming to a close, and will be finished by end of December...sad faces all around. I'll be honest to say I have not used Dailybooth for over year now, and this sudden news did not come to me as a great shock.

The website started back in February 2009 by the British self called entrepreneur, Jon Wheatley. And very rapidly snow balled into a highly populated site as the months unfolded. Effectively kicking off the online norm of taking photos of yourself everyday and posting them onto the internet.

The idea of the site was to take a photo of yourself everyday for....well how long you wanted to (until you get bored). The photos were of course public on the site, and fellow users could post comments on them and connect with the community, which I must say stayed friendly and loyal throughout the websites existence.

I remember coming addicted to the site during 2010 logging on every day to post my daily photo and commenting on other user photos I was following at the time. Then when the iPhone App arrived, I was even more addicted as it was a lot easier and quicker to post these photos straight from my phone.

The people behind Dailybooth have explained to everyone they can download an archive of their photos to keep forever and the site will shut down on December 31st 2012. I have already downloaded my archive of photos and will be putting them into a respectful video to mark the end of the website.

RIP Dailybooth, it was fun sharing my face with you.

Autumn

The other week me and Lauren took a nice walk in and around Wimbledon Common from the back of my flat. I decide to sieze the opportunity and take some footage whilst we walked around, plus I had been hoping to make a video only focusing on slo mo for a while now.

Here is the result, let me know what you think. I love slow motion, I always find it is so effective!

I think the video turned out just fine!

Tuesday Tunes: MTV EMA's 2012

So the MTV EMA Awards happened on Sunday, and here is a run down of who won what in each category.

Best Female - Taylor Swift
Best Male - Justin Bieber
Best New - Act One Direction
Best Song - "Call Me Maybe," Carly Rae Jepsen
Best World - Stage Justin Bieber
Best Video - "Gangnam Style," PSY
Best Rock - Linkin Park
Best Pop - Justin Bieber
Best Look - Taylor Swift
Best Alternative - Lana Del Rey
Best Hip Hop - Nicki Minaj
Best Live - Taylor Swift
Biggest Fans - One Direction
Best PUSH - Carly Rae Jepsen
Global Icon - Whitney Houston

After seeing this list the first response I can only come up with is to fall around on the floor with fits of laughter. I cannot believe the state of these winners, how can they really class them as being the best in these categories.  Furthermore I thought EMA was an abbreviation for European Music Awards, now tell me if I am wrong, but I can see two people in this list that are genuinely European.
But I guess no one with real taste and opinion in music really cares what happens with the EMA's they're not exactly a credible award, like a Grammy or the Mercury Prize.

It has disgust me for at least 5 years + now at how bad the mainstream music scene has become, everything is so manufacture and so repetitive. Don't get me started on the X Factor!

What are your thoughts on the winners of this award ceremony?

My surprise holiday to Amsterdam

In last week's post I mentioned how I was off for a surprise holiday thanks to Lauren for my birthday, and I am sure if you follow me on Instagram you would have worked out the holiday was to Amsterdam!

We spent 4 relaxing days over in the jammed backed whacky city, I had been before and have been wanting to go back ever since, therefore very excited after finding out the surprise.

Lauren had never been before, therefore I showed her around the city a little on the first day, of course taking her to the Red Light District. After seeing it all before, the area still comes to a shock at how open it is, and not hidden due to the explicitly of it all. The area all feels like a obscure theme park.

Our time was spent with a lot of walking and exploring the city and relaxing in bars with a nice beer or a coffee. I just love the architecture and how small the city is. Which resulted in stumbling across some familiar areas after the first day. Walking from one side to the city to the other is so easy.

We took a trip to the Heineken Experience to gain ourselves two free pints, and an interesting look into the history of the company. After visiting the tour I have to say my love for Heineken has significantly grown.

Before arrive in Amsterdam Lauren had discovered Blood Red Shoes were playing whilst we were in the city, I had never seem them before so we had to get tickets. The show was great, Steve and Laura play perfectly together, and it stills blow me away how heavy Lauras guitar playing can sound! Also, this was our first time seeing a show abroad, so a whole new experience for the both of us.

They performed at the Paradiso, which is a converted church. We discovered the venue has held sets for an impressive selection of bands for instance; Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Metallica, Florence and the Machine...the list is endless.
Of course I recorded some songs from the set, which can be found here and here.

I enjoyed my whole time in the city, and I think I have to go back, I just love the culture over their, it's very casual and laid back. And ultimately everything is just so nice to look at.

Now for some photos!

A cheese show gave our free samples.
We went there everyday!

This was the majority of the first day.

I could have taken to many of these photos!

Me on the last day.

Lauren (hiding) on the last day!

Have you ever been?

Surprise Holiday!

I always pack light!

Yesterday I was on a plane with Lauren for a SURPRISE holiday she has been planning for my birthday!

Therefore today's post has been scheduled from Saturday (3rd Nov)... So right now, I am technically typing in the past....confusing.

Anyway, I will try and get some photos up on here if and when it happens! But I can't promise anything, however I am sure I will try and post some pictures on my Instagram, so look out for those!

Of course when I arrive back in England on Wednesday evening I will write a blog post all about it :)

BON VOYAGE!

There Will Be Beards

Yesterday it was 1st November, and of course you all know what that means (if you are a man). MOVEMBER!

The fantastic month where practically all men grow facial hair throughout November. The main theme is to grow a moustache, however I am not too happy with growing a moustache, I end up looking like a gay pornstar, policeman, or even worse a paedophilia!

Therefore I go all out, and simply grow a beard for the whole month, it is a good fun I enjoy the facial
hair. Better still, Lauren likes my beard...WIN!

Here is me from today at my current Day 02 state.

I was very tired this morning,
and look stubble already!
I am hoping to get Matthew Connell on board this month with having a 'Fenixx Beard Off', my plan is to set up a separate page on the Fenixx site to showcase our attempts throughout the month.

Perhaps having a vote at the end on who had the best beard!

Thursday's Tunes - Every Time I Die @ The Haunt

I couldn't believe the view we had!

Over my birthday weekend I was lucky enough to go and see Every Time I Die at The Haunt in Brighton with Lauren. I was so excited to see them perform as I have been a AHUUUGE fan for at least 6 years now. With unfortunately many times missing the chance to see them live.

The whole show just blew me away, I know they were going to be excellent from other reviews. But this just exceeded my expectations by 110%, they hit the stage and smashed through their 1 hour set with tracks covering all their albums. A good mixture of old and new, which merged together perfectly. You could tell the whole band were not messing around, they were in high spirits, their stage presence was amazing. I couldn't believe they do this at least 5 nights a week on tour!

I loved the venue, me and Lauren were informed of a balcony upstairs, which was close to empty, lucky for Lauren as she is 5ft therefore can never see when we go to gigs. Therefore we got the front row spot to watch the whole show away from the fights in the mosh pit down below. Due to the venue being so small, the stage was esaily accessable, meaning there was someone stage diving at least every 2 seconds, with the encouragement from front man, Keith Buckely. It was like watching ants running around from the balcony.

I loved every single second of the show, there was plenty of head banging from me throughout the whole set. The band are such a joy to watch, and with their hard punching riffs you can't stop yourself from moving to the music, and scream the odd lines in the songs from time to time.

Basically as you can tell I loved it, and I want to see them again so so bad. I am very glad to say after the 6 years waiting, it was certainly worth it!

AMAZING!

If you have ever been tempted to see them live, then I suggest you buy a ticket whilst you can!

I recorded some videos in the show, you can seem, here, here, here and here.

HOUSE

Today's video for my YouTube channel, this was made a few years back at my old house during university. I wanted to upload it again, as I plan to make a new one for my new house.

I remember editing this together and it was great fun. I look forward to making the new one :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

Today is my 24th Birthday! I cannot believe I reaching the end of my 20s :(
I still feel 21....crazy times!

So I have roughly been on this planet for roughly;
8,765 Days
Or 210,380 Hours
OR 1.262e+7 Minutes
OR! 7.574e+8 Seconds

That got a bit confusing, but thanks to Google for helping me with those answers!

Wish me a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! In the comments down below, that would be nice :) Stevie Wonder has already done it for me ;)

Move

It has become clear to me that every Wednesday I post up some sort of video content, last few months it has been Super Busy Chicks, well today I uploaded a new video to my YouTube Channel.

I uploaded this a while back on my Vimeo page, however due to getting more attention on this YouTube page, I thought it was a no brainer to upload it over there instead.

The short piece of video consists of footage containing a moving element, whilst keeping the camera static. Watching this back after filming it long ago, it is clear to me I need my own tripod, and I can see how bad my exporting settings were back then. We are always living and learning!

What do you think!?

Random Album Game

I played this little game last year sometime, and had some good fun with it. The game cropped up again on Facebook, and I decided to play it again.

This game has a few simple steps to create a totally random album cover for a fictional band, and sometimes the outcome you would think this album and band could exist.

HOW IT WORKS:

1 - Go to wikipedia and hit random. The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to quotationspage.com and hit random. The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to Flickr.com and click on “explore the last seven days”. Third picture no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4 - Use Photoshop or similar (picnik.com is a free online photo editor) to put it all together.

5 - Enjoy what you have created.

Here is what I created, yep completely random, I can actually imagine this printed out on a Vinyl sleeve.

This quick and simple game is good fun, perhaps a nice way to touch up on your design skills.

Have a go yourself :)

Time is slipping away

Over the weekend me and Lauren had another lazy one, we watched the two previous James Bond films ready for this weeks release. Cooked up some nice dinner, and made some homemade fruit and nut chocolate, a Super Busy Chicks recipe. We also watched The Breakfast Club, Lauren has never seen it (I KNOW!).  Finally we squeezed in a little look around the shops in London, where I bought myself a new shirt ready for my birthday later this week!

Whilst looking in the shops, it was hard to ignore the fact Christmas is fast approaching us, and is now only weeks away. I cannot believe this time of year has arrived round again. 2012 has quite literally ran away from me without realising.

It is true what people say, the years go quicker onces you were older. I have full experience of this now, and I'll be honest I am not enjoying it. Don't get me wrong this year has still been amazing, I went to New York, Paris, Bestival, Valencia and a few other lovely trips in England. It's just the fact that time is just rolling past at break neck speed. In December I will already be working at th1ng for a year. It still only feels like 6 months!

I wonder if there are any tips on how to make time feel a little slower. I guess that is bordem. Do you feel time is going too quickly now as well!?

I've Been Me

I have uploaded another video to my old personal YouTube channel, I made this one a while ago for Vimeo. Since putting it on YouTube It has received more attention already, I think that's a sign.

I am definitely going to try and get a new video on this channel once a week, I have missed the attention the videos recieve from subscribers. The YouTube community is fantastic!

Tech Thursday: The New GoPro

Yesterday I stumbled across the link of footage captured with the brand new GoPro HERO3: Black Edition....and I was certainly blown away!

For those of you who don't know, GoPro is a company who build cameras for extreme filming conditions. They have widely been used for extreme sports such as; surfing, skiing, motorcross...blah blah blah. The camera has a strong casing to stop any debris and even water getting in. Therefore the camera is perfect to get thrown about and even shooting underwater, like I used it in my music promo for Kid Champion. The camera can be attached to many mounts, for helmets, surf boards etc.

The first model for the brand was a good start, then with the second model it was still not quite there. However, with this new model HERO3, it is looking very promosing! I am blown away with the sharpness of the imagine, and colour quality you will be able to get from it. I really want one to shoot some epic shots for personal use, or perhaps another music promo! The price for the camera is outstanding as well, $199!

Check out the video below of them showing off the capabilities of this new camera, amazing stuff!

I spent the majority of yesterday watching more videos on the GoPro YouTube channel, there is some impressive content using their cameras on there!

Super Busy Chicks (Episode 17)

Today's video from Super Busy Chicks is a special episode focusing on top tips for beauty treatments. Of course, this doesn't totally appeal to me. However, the spa days Jemma Forte mentions do sound incredible, one day I will go to one!

New Music Promo

If you follow Fenixx on Twitter or Facebook or me on Twitter and Instagram you may have noticed a few photos being posted of an epic ship. Well this was the location for our latest music promo for the band, King Lizard. The video is for the track 'A Nightmare Livin' The Dream', which is set to be released along with the album, of the same name.

The shoot was very hard rocking, and demanding for us all. The biggest shoot we have ever had, we are all really excited to show you the finished product. Take a look at these as a teasers for now.

The Weekend [13 + 14th Oct]

This weekend me and Lauren both had no plans whatsoever therefore we decided to take both days as they come...keeping it chilled and relaxing with no plans.

Saturday was such a relaxing day, we started things off around 12pm by cooking up some brunch, consisting of American style pancakes. We used this recipe, and I think they're turned out just right, tasting perfectly how I remember from my holidays to America. However, next time I will make a bigger mixture, so we can have larger pancakes to keep in ket with that proper American style. Whilst making them, I couldn't help but realise how different our English pancakes are, and that they are actually Crepes. And I am sure the Americans laugh at us when we call them pancakes.

The day plodding on nicely, we watched The Iron Lady with some carrot cake we made earlier in the week and green tea. Then finished off the evening with a visit to Windsor to eat a juicy burger from Gourmet Burger Kitchen...delicious!

Sunday again started off late around 12pm at Laurens house, we gobbled down a Roast dinner thanks to Laurens mum, then took a visit to Slough. I have to say that will be my last visit to Slough. It's not a nice area...however I couldn't help but feel slightly sorry for the town. It just looks as if the area has been forgotten by everyone. Endless amounts of shops closed down, and the town just looks a little dirty. And the shops that have been replaced are all the same...very odd and quite depressing.

It was a lovely weekend spent together, we haven't do it in ages!

What did you get up to at the weekend!?

Dusting off an old YouTube account

During my second and third year of university I found myself filming weekly Vlogs for my own personal YouTube channel, WatchingMatthew. These were great fun, and I discovered some great people out there doing the same thing. Some how I managed to scrape together over 800 subscribers on the account! It's crazy to think that, considering I was so rubbish at talking to the camera.

The experience was great fun, I improved my editing skills, discovered new tricks and tips with editing, and more importantly improved my creativity. Unfortunately after completing university my schedule became rather busy from working full time, therefore I couldn't commit to the weekly Vlogs :(
HOWEVER, I have decided to open the channel up again and push myself to start uploading content as often as I can. These videos wont be Vlogs....therefore you wont be seeing my face (although this could change). The videos will just be experiments with camera work and other techniques, to again help to improve my skills.

This is the first new video I have uploaded on there, I put this together the other day when I had some free time. I hope you enjoy it.

If you are on Twitter could you CLICK HERE, I would love it if The Maccabees watched the video :)

#lookforlonger

The other night me and Lauren were traveling home from a nice meal together (I'll post about it another time...it was amazing). We stumbled across this billboard on the underground at Goodge Street station.

We looked at it thinking it was a mental piece of vague advertising, then after closer inspection we noticed a few London underground stations had been represented in the collage of randomness.

Once I got home I googled the website address lookforlonger.com - To discover it's actually a game, and you have to name ALL 75 underground stations represented in the picture to win a selection of prizes.

This idea really interests me, as I love these collage pictures, where you keep looking and discover little things happening here and there in the frame. I think they can be really clever, and great fun to look at.

So far, me and Lauren have ticked off;
- Seven Sisters
- Elephant & Castle
- Knightsbridge
- Green Park
- Lambeth North
- Angel
- Marbel Arch
- Barking
- Bank

Then it just got a little hard, I need to look again. What stations can you notice!?
